Ukraine has the right, according to international law, to attack legitimate military targets in Russia to defend itself, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said during a visit to new alliance member Sweden on Friday.
This declaration comes in response to recent statements from the Kremlin, warning that Western nations providing Ukraine with weapons to attack Russian territory will face consequences.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has even suggested the possibility of arming adversaries of the West in retaliation.
“Ukraine has the right to self-defense,” Stoltenberg remarked at a news conference with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, held at a military base near Stockholm. “This right includes targeting legitimate military objectives on the territory of the aggressor, which in this case is Russia.”
Stoltenberg emphasized that Russia initiated this war against Ukraine, a peaceful and democratic neighboring country that did not pose a threat to Russia. “There is no question that Ukraine has the right to hit targets on Russian territory,” he affirmed.
