France and its allies will continue to stand with Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron said during a speech in Normandy on Thursday.

World leaders, including Polish President Andrzej Duda, U.S. President Joe Biden, France’s Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, gathered in Normandy on Thursday to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife were also present on the occasion.

“We are here and will not weaken,” the French President told his Ukrainian counterpart, assuring continued support for Kyiv amid Russian aggression.

At the international ceremony, Macron awarded the highest honor in the land, the Legion d’Honneur, to three more U.S. WWII veterans: Joseph Miller, Richard Calvin Rung, and Arlester Brown.

Earlier, U.S. President Biden said in another D-Day ceremony that Ukraine, which is at war with Russia, was invaded by a “tyrant intent on domination” and that democracy is now more at risk than at any point since World War Two.

On June 6, 1944, Allied forces launched a massive invasion of Nazi-occupied France during World War II. Known as Operation Overlord, the invasion began with the landing of thousands of troops on the beaches of Normandy in Northern France, marking the start of a significant campaign to liberate Western Europe from Nazi control.

With war raging in Ukraine on Europe’s borders, the anniversary of this turning point in WWII carries special resonance. It also takes place in a year of many elections, including for the European Parliament this week and in the U.S. in November.
