A Polish serial killer whodunnit has shot to the top of Netflix’s most watched movies following its premiere at the end of May.
Beating off competition from the likes of Jennifer Lopez’s ‘Atlas’ and the futuristic thriller ‘Bionic’, in less than 24 hours after its debut, murder mystery ‘Colors of Evil: Red’ was in second place in the TOP 10 of Netflix’s most popular films.
Directed by Adrian Panek and based on the first of a trilogy of novels by Małgorzata Oliwia Sobczak, the murder mystery is now charting in 92 countries and is number one on the most-watched movies chart in 45 of them.
This success is the latest in a string of Polish hits to triumph on the global streaming platform.

Last year saw the drama ‘Forgotten Love’ (Znachor) secure second place internationally among non-English Netflix films with 11.9 million views, while the platform hit a new high with over 260 million subscribers driven by the Polish series '1670'.
Meanwhile, the erotic mafia thriller ‘365 Days’ by Polish directors Barbara Białowąs and Tomasz Mandes became one of the most watched movies ever on Netflix, despite being panned by critics who called it one of the worst films ever.
Its sequel, ‘365 Days: This Day’ gained nearly 78 million streaming hours in its first week on Netflix.

In 2022, the streaming giant revealed it had invested €105 million in Poland in 2020 and 2021 and announced it was to open an office in Warsaw to work more closely with local creators and producers on new content.
Larry Tanz, Netflix’s head of original series in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, told Broadband TV News at the time: “Poland has become a key market for us. Given the growing number of Polish productions, the time has come to get even closer to the local creative and film industry.”
In May of the same year, the Polish romp comedy ‘Sexify’ became what was then the most-watched show on Netflix worldwide, charting in the top 10 in 80 countries.

Now a new report shows that global demand for Polish comedies is on the rise.
According to global entertainment data insight firm PlumResearch, original scripted comedy was identified as being in high demand, with Polish originals exceeding international demand compared to other CEE countries.
PlumResearch’s research director, Jonathan Broughton, told Television Business International that although only 11% of Polish TV originals aired during Q1 2024 were comedies, they accounted for more than 50% of global viewing for Polish scripted originals.
“Polish comedies such as 1670, Squared Love, and Operation Nation have all performed well for global streamer Netflix,” he added.
