Darren Aronofsky, the acclaimed American director behind “Requiem for a Dream” and “Black Swan,” has obtained Polish citizenship.

Aronofsky was connected to his Polish heritage through his grandmother, who emigrated to the U.S. with part of her family.

“Yes, I can confirm that Mr. Darren Aronofsky officially became a Polish citizen a month ago,” said Marcin Mamiński, the lawyer who assisted Aronofsky in acquiring his citizenship, in an interview with Wprost.

“It was Aronofsky’s parents’ wish that he would one day become a Polish citizen,” he added.

The process of obtaining citizenship is quite lengthy, typically taking four to five years. However, the director’s Polish ancestry expedited the procedure.

“After obtaining Polish citizenship, Aronofsky will appear in Poland more often,” said Mamiński, adding that so far, the American director has only occasionally visited the country.

Career highlight

“Black Swan” earned Darren Aronofsky the most Oscar nominations, but the only award went to Natalie Portman for Best Leading Actress.

His last production, “Whale,” received two Oscar nominations. The drama tells the story of a father struggling with extreme obesity who wants to rebuild his relationship with his daughter. Brendan Fraser won the Oscar for Best Leading Actor, and the film also won for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
