Polish-born Sławek Szczepański has been elected as the new mayor of Merton, South London, to lead council meetings and represent the borough at various events.
Having started his journey in the U.K. as a carpenter, Szczepański has been a dedicated volunteer, working with several charitable organizations, particularly the Polish Family Association, which he leads.
Szczepański delivered an inspiring speech at his inaugural council meeting on Wednesday, May 22.

During his swearing-in ceremony, Szczepański said: “I have lived in Merton since moving to the U.K. and have worked with many community groups, promoting cultural understanding and celebrating the rich diversity that makes this borough unique.”
He continued: “After many years of experience in various communities, I am honored to be elected to serve Merton and all its residents, and look forward to fulfilling my duties as mayor.”
Szczepański will be supported in his role by his wife, Kamila Dyczko. He has chosen not to appoint a chaplain but will maintain the tradition of prayers before council meetings, led by members of different faith groups.
The new deputy mayor of Merton is Councillor Brenda Fraser, the former mayor.
