Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel’s top priority remains destroying Hamas amid accusations he is “whitewashing” a peace deal heavily promoted by the U.S. President Joe Biden.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a member of the far-right coalition, called the proposal “foolhardy” and repeated a threat to quit the cabinet. Ben-Gvir said that Netanyahu had invited him to read the peace plan but that his aides had twice failed to supply him with a transcript.
On Saturday, Ben-Gvir said that the plan would constitute “a victory for terrorism and a threat to Israel’s national security.” Responding in a video statement, Netanyahu called the destruction of Hamas his “top priority” and said that this was being actively pursued along with the recovery of hostages. He said that both these goals were part of a plan to wind down the war and had been approved by the highest level of government.
“This is not something that I am adding now,” Netanyahu said. “This is not something that I am adding because I am under pressure within the coalition. It is something we agreed on unanimously in the war cabinet.”
