Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused China of trying to pressure other countries into not attending a planned peace summit on the war in Ukraine.

Speaking at a security forum in Singapore on Sunday, Zelenskyy said that Russia was attempting to disrupt the upcoming talks in Switzerland later this month and that Beijing was “working hard” to help.

He said: “Russa, using Chinese influence in the region, using Chinese diplomats also, does everything to disrupt the peace summit.

“Regrettably, it is unfortunate that such a big independent powerful country as China is an instrument in the hands of (Russian leader Vladimir) Putin.”

Beijing’s foreign ministry has denied the claims, saying on Monday that “China’s position is open and transparent, and there is absolutely no instance of us putting pressure on other countries.”

Spokeswoman Mao Ning added: “On peace talks, China’s position is fair and just. It does not target any third country, and of course is not aimed at Switzerland’s hosting of this summit for peace.”

China has insisted that it is neutral in the ongoing war and is looking to end the hostilities through dialogue.

However, the country has been accused of siding with Moscow by sending component parts for weapons and supporting the Russian economy by buying large amounts of oil and gas.
