Hubert Hurkacz has advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2024 Roland Garros after winning a match against Denis Shapovalov that spanned two days.
Earlier in Paris, Hurkacz defeated Brandon Nakashima following a tough five-set match against Japan’s Shintaro Mochizuki in the previous round. The match against Nakashima lasted three hours and 14 minutes and also spread over two days due to rain delays.
Hurkacz and Shapovalov began their third-round encounter on Friday. Rain interrupted the match while Hurkacz was leading 6:3, 7:6(0), 2:1. After waiting for the weather to improve, organizers postponed the match to the following day.
The match resumed on Saturday evening on the covered Suzanne Lenglen court. Despite the change, Hurkacz secured victory with a final score of 6:3, 7:6(0), 4:6, 6:1. The players had to adjust to new conditions, leading to errors, but Hurkacz adapted faster and finished strong.
Over the two days, they played for two hours and 41 minutes.
Hurkacz served nine aces, was broken twice, converted four of nine breakpoints, hit 32 winners, and made 27 unforced errors. Shapovalov recorded five aces, 35 winners, and 51 unforced errors.
