The Ukrainian Navy fired missiles on Friday which Kyiv said hit an oil refinery in Russia’s western Krasnodar region.

In addition to the Navy strike, which a military statement said was conducted using Ukrainian-made Neptune missiles and had caused explosions at the target site, a second oil facility was also struck in the same region by Ukrainian drones, according to the statement.

The Ukrainian military has targeted Russian energy infrastructure in a bid to undermine the country’s war economy. Friday’s strike formed part of a broader operation intended to hamper logistics, especially of forces based on the Crimean peninsula, Reuters reported citing a security source.

"Russia's 'modern' and 'effective' air defense system once again proved powerless against our missiles and unmanned systems and failed to protect important facilities used for logistics and supply of the Russian army," the Ukrainian military wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

The Russian defense ministry reported, also on Telegram, that its air defenses had shot down five missiles and 29 drones launched toward Krasnodar.

Reuters’ security source told the agency Friday’s strike was part of operations that had been ongoing for several days, which included a Russian radar-detection system in Crimea being hit the day before.

"This SBU [Security Service of Ukraine] special operation blinded the Russian air defense on the significant part of the front," the source said.
