Poland’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was the second lowest in the EU despite shooting up 3.0% year-on-year in April.
According to data released by Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, the number of unemployed people in Poland jumped from 523,000 in March to 528,000 in April.
However, these figures contradict Poland’s Central Statistics Office (GUS); according to them, unemployment fell by 0.2% in April to 5.1%. The discrepancy is explained by the use of different methodologies. In Poland, GUS takes into account all unemployed people registered at labor offices, including those not looking for work. Eurostat, on the other hand, only takes into account active job seekers.
Eurostat’s report showed that the Czech Republic had the lowest unemployment rate in the bloc, registering at just 2.7%.
