Eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz triumphed over American Brandon Nakashima with scores of 6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the second round of the French Open in Paris.
Facing Nakashima for the first time, Hurkacz had defeated Japan's Shintaro Mochizuki in the previous round in a five-set match, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3. This time, Hurkacz performed more dominantly, dropping only one set to the American, who is ranked 84th globally.
The match, which officially lasted three hours and 14 minutes, was played over two days due to multiple rain delays. Starting on Wednesday at 11 am, the game was repeatedly halted, with the final ball struck on Thursday.
Resuming at 5-5 in the fourth set, the concluding phase took just 20 minutes. Hurkacz sealed his victory in typical fashion, serving his 16th ace of the match to close it out.
Next, the 27-year-old Polish player will face either 25th seed Frances Tiafoe of the United States or Canada's Denis Shapovalov.
