World's number one Iga Świątek defeated the former top WTA player Naomi Osaka 7:6 (7-1), 1:6, 7:5 in a thrilling second round match of the Grand Slam French Open tournament held on clay courts of Roland Garros in Paris.

The current and former leaders of the world ranking, who have won four Grand Slam titles apiece, faced each other in the second round in Paris. The 26-year-old Osaka, ranked 134th, has recently returned to the top-tier competition after giving birth to a baby girl.

But that and the WTA rank difference played little role in the Wednesday's match. Świątek, aiming for her third successive triumph at Roland Garros, managed to snatch victory in the first set in tie-break, but got smashed by Osaka in the second, scoring only one game.

The Japanese gained momentum in the decisive, third set and was only one game away from defeating her rival (5:2) but determined Świątek responded in great fashion, winning five games in a row and the entire match after three hours of superb tennis display by both athletes. The Pole is now waiting for her third round rival, but the duel between Jana Fett and Marie Bouzkova was disrupted by rain, with the latter leading 1:0.
