Russian leader Vladimir Putin arrived in Belarus on Thursday evening for a two-day visit to discuss bilateral relations with the country’s leader, Lukashenka.
Upon landing in Minsk, Putin announced that discussions, in addition to security issues and economic cooperation, would focus on “the second phase of exercises involving our Belarusian friends and colleagues in the military sector.”
The Russian media reported that these drills are expected to involve tactical nuclear weapons.
The Russian Ministry of Defense previously stated that the Russian military had commenced the “first phase of exercises” simulating the use of tactical nuclear weapons. This move is portrayed as a reaction to “hostile statements” from Western leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, which the Kremlin views as threats to Russia’s security.
Military experts cited by Reuters suggest that these exercises are intended as a warning to the West to avoid deeper involvement in the Ukraine conflict. Western countries have repeatedly angered Putin for providing continued military and intelligence support to Ukraine.
