The Czech Football Association has launched an investigation into the serious crowd trouble that immediately followed the final whistle of the domestic cup final.

Czech football has been left reeling after rival fans fought running battles on the pitch after Sparta Prague’s 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen.

In a statement released earlier, the Czech FA said: “The management of the Football Association of the Czech Republic immediately after the end of Wednesday's match of the MOL Cup final started its own investigation into the incidents that accompanied the said match.”

Dozens of supporters - many with their faces covered by balaclavas - stormed the pitch at full-time with riot police called in to separate the warring factions. The brawl even disrupted Czech Television’s live broadcast after one presenter was hit by a plastic chair.

"The Football Association regrets the events that occurred after the final because they grossly damage football as a whole," said the Czech FA. “Moreover, it comes at a time when there is a football boom in the Czech Republic, to which the fans have contributed."

Players from both sides appealed for calm as riot police attempted to restore order. Making news around the world, the scale of the disorder delayed the trophy presentation and has left Czech authorities red-faced.

Preceding the trouble, Veljko Birmancevic scored deep into second-half injury time to clinch victory and give Sparta Prague a 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen.
