Lithuania has unveiled plans for a series of ‘ drone operator courses’ to teach civilians how to become drone pilots.
According to the country’s Ministry of Defense, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operator courses will begin at the Military Academy in September along with a ‘drone competence center’ and the setting up of a registry of drone operators.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Defence Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas said: “We can argue endlessly about the importance of drones in future wars, but we all agree that this is a transformative technology, and our country needs to be in the process so that we do not get left behind.
“The goal is for at least a thousand Lithuanian citizens to acquire skills as drone operators.”
He added that the courses will teach students how to operate civilian drones and that those who complete them will be able to “move up the skills ladder” by working with the country’s Riflemen’s Union to train as combat drone pilots.
He went on to say that around €100,000 will go toward NGOs that would organize drone pilots’ clubs, and that schools and colleges are planning to also set up drone classes.
