Poland is now safer and stronger than at any point in modern history, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Saturday in Kraków during a ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino and the establishment of the Polish 2nd Corps Day.

During his speech at the ceremony, he attributed the state of Poland’s defenses to the dedication of Polish soldiers, their commanders, and the visionary policies implemented over the past 35 years. Tusk said: “This is sacred and most important that here in Kraków’s market square, together with Polish soldiers and their commanders, we can proudly and honestly say that Poland is safer and stronger than ever before in modern history.”
Reflecting on his conversations with veterans of the famous Monte Cassino battle, he mentioned their pride in seeing Poland as they had envisioned it during their climb up Monte Cassino—free, secure, and growing stronger each day despite the challenges of the times.

He called the commemoration of the battle a “beautiful commemoration of Polish heroism and bravery.”

In turn, Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, also present at the commemorations, said: “Today, on the 80th anniversary of the battle for Monte Cassino, we are outlining plans for a better, secure Poland for the future, for generations to come.”

“Today, unification and agreement, cooperation within the framework of NATO, among others, is our main task. United we will act. We will defend the borders, sovereignty, and independence of Poland.” Eastern Shield plan

During the event, the prime minister also unveiled the “Eastern Shield” (“Tarcza Wschód”) defense and deterrence plan.

This initiative involves a 10 billion zlotys (€2.34 billion) investment to bolster the security of Poland’s eastern border, including the construction of fortifications.

Tusk said: “We are launching a major project to build a secure border, including fortifications and environmental adjustments, making it impassable for potential enemies.”
