Polish Para-cyclist Magdalena Andruszkiewicz has delighted fans after beating the European record to take gold at the para-athletics in Kobe, Japan.
The Poznań-born athlete outpaced Spain’s Judith Tortosa Villa and America’s Sayer Grooms in the 100m race to cross the finishing line in just 17.51 seconds at the event on Friday.
Speaking after the race, delighted Andruszkiewicz said: “It was just great. Everything worked out perfectly.”
“I wanted to finish the race on the box, and I did it, and I did it in a very good time.”
Her father, Marek, added: “We were afraid of the American woman with whom Magda had the opportunity to race against in Denmark.”
“They were close to each other there. In Kobe, the American was left behind.”
“Simply hard work in training paid off.”
Tortosa Villa took second place with a time of 18.53, while Grooms came in third at 19.02 seconds.
The World Championships in Kobe take place three months before the Paralympics in Paris.
