Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, has expressed dissatisfaction with the selection of an Irish general as the head of the EU Military Committee.
“I would personally have made a different decision; it’s concerning that the head of the EU Military Committee has been appointed from a non-NATO member state. In the face of threats, there is a need to strengthen integration between the EU and the Alliance,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz on Thursday following the selection of an Irish general for the position.
The appointment of Sean Clancy as the new head of the EU Military Committee came after a vote by chiefs of staff from EU member states, bypassing the candidacy of Polish General Sławomir Wojciechowski. Kosiniak-Kamysz had underscored the importance of ensuring Poland’s prominent role and advocating for its officers to hold key positions.
Despite efforts to support General Wojciechowski's candidacy, including his recent promotion to four-star general, Kosiniak-Kamysz affirmed his confidence in Wojciechowski's qualifications and experience.
“We have done everything on our part to promote the candidacy of General Wojciechowski. He was recently promoted to a four-star general, and all the expectations placed on him, in my opinion, have been met... He is a very experienced general, as well as a very experienced diplomat, and he will be utilized,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
Responding to questions about whether the decision could be linked to the recent dismissal of Polish Eurocorps commander General Jarosław Gromadziński, Kosiniak-Kamysz dismissed any connection between the two events.
“These two events have nothing to do with each other. They are completely separate situations involving different individuals; I would not connect these two events in any way,” Kosiniak-Kamysz responded.
The EU Military Committee, responsible for directing EU military activities, awaits approval of Clancy’s appointment by the EU Council. The outgoing chief, Austrian General Robert Brieger, concludes his tenure amidst this transition.
