The world number-one ranked women’s tennis player, Poland’s Iga Świątek, beat the world’s number-three player, America’s Coco Gauff, in the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome on Thursday to reach the final.

Świątek beat Gauff in straight sets, 6:4, 6:3. The match, which lasted an hour and 48 minutes, was the Pole’s tenth victory in 11 games against Gauff.

The win brings Świątek’s total of WTA victories on clay courts to 75 with only 10 defeats, a feat only ever matched by four other women players.

In the final on Saturday, Świątek will face the winner of the other semi-final, between the world number-two, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, and the 13th-ranked American Danielle Collins.

Świątek has previously won the Italian Open twice, in 2021 and 2022.
