World No. 1 Iga Świątek edged into the Quarter Finals of the Italian Open tournament after beating Germany’s Angelique Kerber in straight sets in today’s marquee fourth-round tie.

Kerber, herself a former World No. 1, put forward a spirited display but lost 7:5, 6:3 to the 23-year-old Pole. Lasting ninety-eight minutes, the match was the third time the two stars have met head-to-head - each time Świątek has triumphed.

Kerber, who also has Polish citizenship, had previously held the world No. 1 spot for thirty-eight weeks. Returning to the tour in January following a year’s absence due to maternity leave, Kerber last faced Świątek during her comeback at the United Cup.

Now in her 103rd week as World No. 1, Świątek will face Madison Keys in the next round. Previously, the Pole won back-to-back Italian Open titles in 2021 and 2022.
