Poland will seek to fill the position of a European commissioner for defense if such a role gets created, said Poland’s former prime minister and vice-president of European Parliament on Sunday.

“We are talking about the commissioner in special times, when there is a war going on beyond our eastern border,” Polish Press Agency (PAP) quoted Ewa Kopacz as saying while campaigning ahead of the June 6-9 EU assembly elections.

“I think that we will strive hard for a defense commissioner who will not only prepare strategies for peacetime, but will also recognise threats,” she said.

Kopacz did not bring up any names, but Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has been mentioned in the Polish media as a potential candidate.

“I undoubtedly know people who have experience in both defense and foreign policy,” she said.

As the European Union seeks to become a bigger player in the defense industry, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pledged to create a post dedicated to the sector if she wins a second term later this year.
