The Russian dissident Alexei Navalny was posthumously awarded the Dresden Peace Prize on Sunday.

Navalny, a vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, had died under mysterious circumstances in an Arctic Circle prison camp on February 16.

The award honored his work and struggle for democracy in Russia.

“The resistance of the opposition politician [Navalny- TVP World] was and is an emboldening example to all the human rights defenders who are continuing his activities,” the organizers said.

The prize was accepted by Yulia Navalnaya, Navalny’s widow, while the commendatory speech was delivered by former German President Joachim Gauck.
“I hear many politicians in the West increasingly saying that it is necessary to come to an agreement with Putin, that it is worth listening to him. I see some European ambassadors at Putin’s latest inauguration - and I cannot remain silent. Alexei spoke openly about the threat Putin poses to the world - and I will do so always as long as Putin is in power,” Navalnaya said.

“You can’t agree on anything with Putin. Not a word he says can be trusted, he will never stop. Putin is war,” she stressed.

“We need the memory of this selfless and almost superhumanly courageous man as he shows us that there can be another Russia. Alexei Navalny’s life’s work is therefore a monument. As we have heard many times before, he remains a role model for all those who believe in freedom and dignity for the people of Russia. We will not forget him,” former German President Joachim Gauck remarked.
