A $400 million military aid package is being prepared for Ukraine following the resumption of arms supplies from the U.S., the White House has said.
The package comes in the wake of a $95 billion bill that was finally passed by Congress following months of holdups. Included in the first package will be artillery, munitions for NASAMS air defenses, anti-tank munitions, patrol boats, Stinger missiles, HIMARS systems, armored vehicles and battle-ready small arms.
The details of the package were revealed to Reuters by an unnamed White House official, and will reportedly utilize what is commonly known as Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) - the use of PDA authorizes the President to transfer weapons from US stocks during an emergency without specific congressional approval.
As part of the recently passed $95 billion aid bill, around $60.8 billion has been earmarked for Ukraine with around $8 billion of this sum coming in the form of PDA equipment.
The news comes at a time when Russian forces have launched an armored ground attack on Kharkiv in north-eastern Ukraine. With most recent fighting taking place in the east and the south, the attack has opened a new front and looks to test Ukraine’s resilience to the maximum.
According to analysts, firms such as Lockheed Martin LMT.N, General Dynamics GD.N and Northrop Grumman NOC.N stand to benefit as governmental contracts are signed to replenish stocks.
