The Prague Metro rapid transit network is celebrating 50 years of service with several special events planned for the residents of the Czech capital, announces the Radio Prague International broadcasting station, adding that “people can visit an exhibition on the history of the metro, ride on the historic first trains that opened the Prague subway, and play a geo game that will take them to all the stations around the city.”
According to the radio station, the city’s first metro train, “carrying the communist top brass and selected journalists,” made its first journey on May 9, 1974, from Kačerov to Florenc on line C.
“The event was the main story on the prime-time evening news.”
Currently, the Czech capital manages metro train services on three lines—A, B, and C—with 61 stations across the city. The lines, totaling 65.2 kilometers in length, serve an estimated 1.5 million travelers daily.
The broadcaster says: “To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Prague Transit Company is bringing out its historic trains for a symbolic birthday ride. On May 9, at 0919, members of the public can board the metro and set off on the same route from Kačerov to Florenc.”
The radio channel quotes Petr Witowski, director of Prague public transit company DPP, as saying: “On May 8, which is a public holiday, people will be able to take a ride on four historical trains that will run on the C line from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. They will be running throughout the day so that everyone gets a chance to ride in them.”
