In the heart of the Pieniny National Park, amidst the stunning landscapes and diverse ecosystems, stands a remarkable giant – a European silver fir tree. Recently, a research team led by the Department of Forest Biodiversity at the University of Agriculture in Kraków unveiled an astonishing revelation: this towering fir tree is the tallest native tree in Poland, soaring to an impressive height of 55.86 meters.

According to the Department of Forest Biodiversity’s social media profile, the quest to uncover the tallest trees in Pieniny National Park was fueled by earlier data obtained from aerial lidar and analysis conducted by Łukasz Wilk from the Polish Academy of Sciences Botanical Institute in Krakow.

During their meticulous research within the confines of Pieniny National Park, the team measured the tree finding it to be 55.86 meters high, with a circumference of 328 centimeters at breast height. Moreover, the researchers stumbled upon over 20 European silver firs surpassing the 50-meter mark during the same expedition.

The groundbreaking findings were published by Dr. Jan Bodziarczyk, Professor at the University of Agriculture in Kraków, along with his team.
However, while the European silver fir tree may claim the title of the tree native to Poland, it falls short of surpassing the overall champion. As per measurements conducted in 2021, the honor of being the overall tallest tree in Poland belongs to the Douglas fir, standing at approximately 59.40 meters tall.

This towering giant, aged around 120 years, thrives within the Bardo Forest District under the Regional Directorate of State Forests in Wrocław. Notably, the Douglas fir is classified as an introduced species in Poland, adding to the rich tapestry of the country's arboreal diversity.
