Ukrainian security forces have thwarted an assassination scheme targeting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, leading to the arrest of five individuals allegedly linked to Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB).

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) revealed that among the apprehended suspects are two Ukrainian State Protection Service (UDO) colonels accused of collaborating with the FSB to pass confidential information to Moscow.

“In the network supervised by the FSB in Moscow, there were two UDO colonels who were passing secret information to the Russian Federation,” stated the SBU in a communication published on Telegram on Tuesday.

According to the SBU, the apprehended individuals were not only targeting President Zelenskyy but also had plans to assassinate other key figures, including SBU Chief General Vasyl Malyuk and Military Intelligence Chief General Kyrylo Budanov, which were intended to occur before Easter, a significant holiday in Ukraine.

The SBU's investigation revealed details of the FSB’s strategy, which involved identifying potential assailants within the military, particularly those in proximity to the president's security detail, to hold him hostage before carrying out the assassination. The prompt action taken by Ukrainian authorities demonstrates their dedication to defending the nation's leadership and upholding stability in the face of outside threats.
