Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission, stated on Tuesday in Katowice (southern Poland), that if elected for the next term of office, she would want to nominate a defense commissioner.

The EC President spoke at the opening of the European Economic Congress in Katowice, southern Poland.

She said the new defense commissioner should focus on the European defense industry and coordinate the single market.

Von der Leyen was attending the congress with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Tusk said that if the position of the new commissioner was equipped with a portfolio and instruments strengthening Europe, it would be an interesting proposal for the current Polish foreign minister, Radosław Sikorski.

’Stronger and more complete’

During her speech, von der Leyen also praised Poland for making the European Union much stronger and more complete, referring to the 20th anniversary of the country’s accession to the EU.

She stressed at the outset that this city symbolizes the transformational power of Poland and its people.

She drew attention to the upcoming European elections and the anniversary of the 1989 June elections.
“The very same week that Europeans go to the polls, we will be celebrating the 35th anniversary, 35 years since the June 1989 elections. This was the day when the people of this great nation were finally able to take their destiny into their own hands; after all, these elections marked the birth of a free, democratic, and united Poland,” von der Leyen stressed.

“This desire for freedom, for democracy, the desire to shape our own future lies very deep in the citizens of this nation,” the EC head stressed.
