Von der Leyen reflects on Christian values following visit to John Paul II’s home

Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, paid a visit to the papal museum in Wadowice on Monday. “It's a strong reminder of our Christian values and how they help us deal with all the challenges in this chaotic world,” she said.

Accompanied by Borys Budka, Minister of State Assets, and Marek Sowa, a Member of the Civic Coalition, von der Leyen toured the museum and laid flowers at the monument of John Paul II. Following her exploration of the late pontiff’s family home, she expressed deep emotion, underscoring the enduring importance of Christian values in shaping the world’s responses to contemporary tumult.

“It’s a strong reminder of our Christian values and how they help us deal with all the challenges in this chaotic world,” she emphasized.

Von der Leyen reminisced about attending a Mass led by John Paul II during his 1980 visit to Germany, “He visited Lower Saxony, where I come from,” she noted. “It was a wonderful Mass. I remember his powerful message. He spoke about reconciliation, religious freedom, and Christian unity. It was an amazing message of hope and confidence, which had a lasting impression on me and I will never forget that,” said the President of the European Commission.

The Family Home Museum of Pope John Paul II, anticipating von der Leyen’s visit, outlined plans for her guided tour, including insights into the early life of Karol Wojtyła before his papacy.

The President of the European Commission is set to join Prime Minister Donald Tusk in presenting a vision for Europe during the inauguration of the European Economic Congress in Katowice on Tuesday.
