The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a call to its allies, urging them not to recognize Vladimir Putin as the President of Russia. This statement comes ahead of Putin’s scheduled inauguration on Tuesday. Out of step with Poland and Germany, France has indicated its intention to attend the ceremony.
“Ukraine sees no legal basis to recognize him as democratically elected and legitimate President of the Russian Federation,” the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed in a statement.
Earlier reports from French diplomatic sources had indicated that the French ambassador would be present at Putin’s inauguration. However, sources within French diplomacy highlighted that while Paris acknowledged the results of the March elections in Russia, they condemned the “repressive circumstances” surrounding the voting process.
When queried by journalists on Monday, Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski confirmed that the Polish ambassador would not be attending the inauguration.
Following the March presidential elections in Russia, where Putin reportedly secured over 87% of the vote, the Russian authorities declared his victory. This marks Putin’s fifth term in office, extending his tenure to a total of six years, making him the longest-serving leader in Russia in over two centuries.
The governments of Western countries and various international organizations have echoed concerns over the lack of freedom and democracy in the Russian electoral process.
