Poland’s Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, has announced government plans to form a new command body that will oversee the transformation of the nation’s armed forces. In effect, the new unit would focus not just on procuring the latest weaponry but also on the comprehensive modernization of the armed forces.

Speaking on Monday at Warsaw’s Defence24 press conference, Kosiniak-Kamysz said: “Such a transformation requires leadership and the involvement of various bodies; that’s why we want to establish a transformation command.”

Continuing, he added, “We will oversee and guide the entire process, not only concerning the procurement of weaponry but seamlessly coordinating the entire transformation—that’s what Poland requires right now.”

The creation of a new body that would be responsible for the overhaul of the armed forces was first mooted by Kosiniak-Kamysz back in February. By handing over the management of such a process, the Minister of National Defense hopes to de-politicize this modernization.

Kosiniak-Kamysz said, “We do not support a policy that alters its course every four years, especially when it comes to security.” In light of the ongoing war in Ukraine, he also deemed it appropriate to nominate a new EU defense commissioner who would have access to military funding because, as he said, “one cannot become used to the war.”
