Poland’s Ministry of Climate has announced an inquiry into an alarming incident involving a horse-drawn carriage en route to the Morskie Oko lake in the Tatra Mountains, southern Poland. A video circulating on social media captures the incident, showing one of the horses collapsing on the asphalt road, raising concerns about animal welfare and the practice of using horse-drawn carriages for tourist transportation.

Morskie Oko, nestled in the stunning Tatra Mountains, stands as one of Poland’s premier tourist attractions. While visitors have the option to embark on a two-hour hiking trail to reach the lake, some opt for the convenience of horse-drawn carriages, a tradition that has ignited debates regarding animal treatment and potential overexertion.

The unsettling video footage, recorded on May 3 in the vicinity of Mickiewicz waterfalls along the route to Morskie Oko, captures the distressing moment when one of the horses stumbles and collapses while pulling a cart carrying tourists. The driver’s reported action of striking the horse in the mouth before it finally gets up adds to the scrutiny of the incident.

Media reports indicate that the Ministry of Climate, in collaboration with the Tatra National Park, has committed to conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. This incident, as emphasized by the ministry, is not an isolated event but indicative of wider concerns regarding animal welfare and tourist safety in the region. In response to the public outcry and mounting pressure, the Ministry of Climate has pledged to provide a comprehensive report with conclusive findings on the incident. The inquiry aims to shed light on the circumstances leading to the horse’s collapse and address underlying issues surrounding the use of horse-drawn carriages in tourist transportation.
