Latvia was one of 10 countries that joined the European Union 20 years ago. Our reporter, Sascha Fahrbach, is in the country’s capital, Riga, and visited a place of great importance to Latvians: the Freedom Monument.
The Freedom Monument in Riga, Latvia, erected in 1935, commemorates soldiers of the Latvian War of Independence. It stands 42 meters tall, symbolizing the nation’s freedom and sovereignty.
Crafted from granite, travertine, and copper, its sculptures and bas-reliefs depict Latvian culture and history. The monument, designed by sculptor Kārlis Zāle, survived threats of demolition during Soviet occupation and became a symbol of national identity.
