TVP World interviewed Vad Melnyk, founder of Dronehub, a leading Polish manufacturer of autonomous drone technologies, about how to establish a new business through new ideas while also conforming to the regulations.
Melnyk said that while the European market is “one of the largest in the world” in the field of artificial intelligence and drones, it is nearly impossible to grow a large hardware military defense business in Europe because the continent doesn’t really have a tolerance for failures.
He stressed that in the field of innovation, failures are a given, and thus governments should continue backing innovators even if they do not immediately succeed.
“Elon Musk’s first launches of the rocket were complete failures; now he heads the largest private space-tech company [SpaceX-TVP World] in the world, competing with companies like Lockheed Martin,” Melnyk said.
“If private investors or the government didn’t believe in him, we wouldn’t have SpaceX today,” he added.
He said that the EU should inculcate an approach similar to that of the U.S. and Turkey, where failure only shows that our current direction is not right and that we should try another approach.
“In order for the EU to change and become more competitive to U.S. companies or other non-European companies…we need to tolerate failures and money-losses… and we need to support innovators more,” Melnyk concluded.
