Poland’s Culture Minister, Bartlomiej Sienkiewicz, has announced his resignation from his ministerial position to pursue candidacy in the upcoming European elections.

The decision came following a meeting of the National Council of his party, Civic Platform (PO), held in Warsaw on Wednesday. During the meeting, the council approved the list of candidates for the European Parliament elections scheduled for June 6-9.

Sienkiewicz, who will lead PO’s candidate list in the Świetokrzyskie and Małopolskie provinces, took to social media Platform X to announce his resignation, stating, “Due to the approval of the lists of candidates for the European Parliament by the PO National Council, I submitted my resignation from the position of Minister of Culture and National Heritage to Prime Minister Donald Tusk.”

“I sail into unknown waters but in a just pirate cause; we must help Europe defend itself against the risk of war,” said the former head of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz.

The Minister announced that he wants to address European security issues in the European Parliament. “My colleagues on the list are top politicians. Donald Tusk was very keen for us - as a team - to be able to conduct Polish policy in the EU in a tough and decisive manner in the face of the challenge before us,” he stressed.

Asked about the affairs of the ministry he is leaving, he said the ministry is well organized. “Please do not worry about the Ministry of Culture, it is really very well organized, legally as well,” he emphasized.

Sienkiewicz also emphasized that the decision regarding his successor at the ministry lies with the Prime Minister.
