Russia and Tajikistan conduct joint counter-terrorism drills

Soldiers from Russia and Tajikistan concluded several days of collaborative training exercises in Tajikistan, focusing on scenarios involving incursions by militants or illegal armed groups across the border.

Tajikistan shares a lengthy border with Afghanistan, where an Islamic State branch operates. Following a recent attack claimed by the militant group near Moscow, in which at least 144 people were killed, the exercises aimed to prepare for potential security threats.

Footage released by the Russian Defense Ministry showcased the drills, featuring the deployment of attack helicopters, drones, multiple launch rocket systems, howitzers, and tanks in desert and mountainous terrain to combat simulated enemies.

The objectives of the exercises included the eradication of terrorist groups, drawing from lessons learned by Russia’s military during the conflict in Ukraine.

As members of a security alliance comprising former Soviet states, Russia and Tajikistan maintain strong military ties, with Russia maintaining a military base in Tajikistan. The joint exercises underscore the importance both nations place on collaborative military cooperation.

Despite recent tensions stemming from a deadly attack near Moscow, where most suspects apprehended by Russia are Tajik nationals, both countries continue to prioritize joint security efforts. Moscow has suggested Ukrainian involvement in the attack, an accusation vehemently denied by Kyiv.

Putin has called for a reassessment of immigration policies, citing the need to address security concerns, particularly in light of the significant Central Asian migrant population in Russia.

Tajikistan refuted claims by a senior Russian security official alleging Ukrainian embassy involvement in recruiting mercenaries to combat Russia, further highlighting diplomatic tensions amid regional security challenges.
