On Monday the Polish President hosted representatives of the board of directors of the Union of Poles in Belarus (ZPB) Andżelika Borys and Marek Zaniewski at the Presidential Palace, the Chancellery of the President reported in the evening.
Borys, among other things, recounted her recent meeting with Andrzej Poczobut, a prominent Polish minority activist, currently incarcerated in a penal colony in Novopolotsk, which took place after receiving Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s approval.
The Monday meeting at the Presidential Palace was also attended by Presidential Minister Andrzej Dera and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the “Aid to Poles in the East Foundation” Mikołaj Falkowski.
The Union of Poles in Belarus had been the largest organization for the Polish minority. In 2005 it was banned by the authorities, but continued its activities nevertheless. In March 2021, arrests were made within the body’s leadership and activists. Andrzej Poczobut, an activist and journalist, was subsequently convicted in a political trial and imprisoned.
Andżelika Borys, who led the ZPB, was released from prison and has been residing in Belarus after it was reported in April 2023 that charges against her had been dropped.
