Tennis: Poland triumphs over Switzerland 3:0, advances to Billie Jean King Cup finals

Iga Świątek triumphed over Céline Naef with a score of 6:4, 6:3 in the third match of Poland’s away game against Switzerland in the Billie Jean King Cup, currently being held in Biel. With a lead of 3:0, Poland has already secured its advancement to the BJK Cup Finals, scheduled for November in Seville.

On Friday, Świątek secured a victory against Simona Waltert with a score of 6:3, 6:1 in the first match. In the second match, Magdalena Fręch overcame Naef with a score of 6:7 (8-10), 7:5, 6:3. Consequently, Poland took a 2:0 lead.

The Swiss team, currently ranked third in the ITF national teams’ standings for the Billie Jean King Cup, faced off against Poland, which is ranked 17th. However, the hosts were unable to field their strongest lineup. Belinda Bencic, the Olympic champion from Tokyo, has been on a break for an extended period (she announced in November that she is expecting a child), and Viktorija Golubic was unable to recover from her injury in time.

In a scenario where the match’s outcome has already been determined, the second Saturday single was cancelled. For the upcoming doubles match, the captains have nominated the pairs: Maja Chwalińska and Katarzyna Kawa for Poland, and Céline Naef and Jil Teichmann for Switzerland. It’s worth noting that Teichmann was part of the Swiss team when they triumphed in the BJK Cup finals in Glasgow in 2022.

The two-day meeting was crucial for securing advancement to the BJK Cup Finals, scheduled to take place in Seville this November. Notably, the Canadians will be returning as the defending champions.
