Magdalena Fręch defeated Celine Naef 6:7 (8-10), 7:5, 6:3 in the second duel of Poland’s away match against Switzerland in the Billie Jean King Tennis Cup. In the opening match on the hard surface in Biel, Iga Świątek defeated Simona Waltert 6:3, 6:1.
Fręch (52 WTA) overcame her 18 year old opponent in a match where neither player took many chances. But it was Naef (148) who made fewer errors in the opening set, winning in a tie break despite being set point down at one point.
The 26-year-old from Łódź (central Poland) struggled to gain the upper hand in the second set, as she started to play more on the front foot she made more mistakes. But despite being two points away from defeat she showed spirit to bounce back to level the match at a set-apiece.
Despite losing her opening service game of the decisive set, Fręch’s greater experience eventually told, ending a near three hour duel.

The Swiss women are in third place in the ITF national team standings at the Billie Jean King Cup. Poland is 17th, but the hosts could not field their strongest lineup.
Tokyo Olympic champion Belinda Bencic is out of action (she announced in November that she was expecting a baby), and Viktorija Golubic has not recovered from injury in time.
The Biel rivalry will continue on Saturday, when Świątek and Naef will face each other, followed by Fręch and Waltert.
The teams are seeking qualification for the BJK Cup Finals which will be held in Seville in November. The current holders are the Canadian women.
