French President Emmanuel Macron said the world was heading towards a “permanent geopolitical and geostrategic shift” as he toured an explosives factory in south-west France on Thursday.

“The world we are talking about will not end if the war ends tomorrow. Because there has been a massive rearmament in Russia recently,” Macron said.

“And because all over Europe you can see military spending and orders increasing. And geopolitics are changing all over the world. So we are well on the way to a permanent geopolitical and geostrategic shift in which the defence industry will play an increasingly important role. And that is what we are mobilizing,” he continued.

He was visiting the EURENCO factory in Bergerac, which manufactures the propellant used in the shells of France’s Caesar howitzers, several of which have been sold or donated to Ukraine to fend off Russia’s invasion.

“Over the last two years, you have made an extremely significant effort to reorganize working hours and production. You’ve already approximately doubled your production,” Macron emphasized.

Macron previously said in January France would boost military spending by more than a third in the coming years.
