Insiders from Ukraine’s Special Services informed the Kyiv Post that the Kremlin is preparing to officially accuse Vasyl Maliuk, the Head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), of orchestrating the assault on Crocus City Hall. Maliuk has been singled out as the primary target by the Kremlin.
As per these sources, Russian President Vladimir Putin “has not forgiven the SBU for the two strikes on the Crimean bridge,” especially the initial strike, which coincided with the Russian president’s birthday, as well as the assaults conducted by Sea Baby drones on Russian vessels.
“Another sensitive area where the SBU has made significant impact is the country’s refineries and gas stations. Additionally, the Service has been effectively countering Russian agents within Ukraine,” the source revealed.
“Therefore, the detained Tajiks, who were tortured following the attack, will conveniently be found to possess ‘Maliuk’s business cards’,” the source further explained.
On Friday, March 22, gunmen opened fire at the Crocus City concert hall near Moscow, resulting in the deaths of 143 concertgoers..
Four suspects in the attack – all purportedly from Tajikistan, according to Russian state media – have been apprehended, along with several suspected accomplices.
The attack was claimed by the Islamic State (IS). Despite Putin acknowledging the involvement of “radical Islamists,” he persisted in accusing Kyiv of aiding the suspects’ escape into Ukraine, a claim Kyiv vehemently denied.
Individuals from Russian intelligence circles also pointed fingers at the West and Ukraine for the attack, though they failed to provide any supporting evidence.
Putin’s inner circle doubts Kyiv’s involvement
A Bloomberg article disclosed that Putin’s inner circle doubts his claims that Ukraine was involved in the deadly concert hall attack in Moscow on March 22. Nonetheless, they suggest that Putin intends to exploit the tragedy to galvanize public support for the war with Ukraine.
The United States revealed that it had issued both public and private warnings to Russia in early March regarding extremist plots to target a concert hall in Moscow.
Unnamed U.S. intelligence officials later disclosed to American media outlets that they specifically cautioned Moscow about Crocus City Hall being the target of an IS attack.
Alexander Bortnikov, director of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), remarked that the information provided by U.S. agencies was only of “a general nature.”
