WCK to coordinate return of volunteer’s body after IDF attack

The Polish foreign ministry has announced that the World Central Kitchen (WCK) charity will handle the repatriation of volunteers who were killed in the Gaza Strip in an IDF airstrike, including Polish humanitarian worker Damian Soból. These volunteers were part of a mission providing aid amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

On April 1, an Israeli airstrike targeted vehicles carrying seven WCK volunteers, resulting in their deaths. The group had just delivered food supplies shipped from Cyprus to the Gaza Strip, aiming to alleviate the dire situation for the residents there. Along with Soból and a Palestinian driver, the victims were citizens of Australia, the U.K., and dual citizens of the United States and Canada. Pawel Wroński, spokesperson for the Polish Foreign Ministry, stated that while Poland offered assistance in repatriating Soból’s body, WCK opted to manage the process independently, leveraging its own resources and systems. The timeline for Soból’s body’s return to Poland remains uncertain, with continued oversight from the Polish consul in Cairo.
The backdrop of this tragedy is the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas, which flared up following an attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023.

This conflict has plunged the Gaza Strip into a severe humanitarian crisis, with over two million Palestinians in need of aid. The region's infrastructure has been heavily damaged, leading to widespread shortages of basic necessities.

The World Food Programme reports that the majority in northern Gaza survive on less than one meal a day, highlighting the acute need for international humanitarian assistance.
