Reports indicate that a fire and explosion occurred underground at the hydroelectric facility, located in Bargi near Bologna, during the early afternoon hours. Enel, the Italian utility group, confirmed that a fire had erupted on one of its transformers at the plant.
The explosion, which took place around 3:00 pm, is said to have originated at a dam situated on Lake Suviana, one of the three artificial lakes that supply the power station.
Marco Masinara, mayor of the nearby town of Camugnano, conveyed the grim news of three fatalities and four individuals still unaccounted for, while also noting that three others sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the hospital. Masinara emphasized that the situation was continuously evolving.
Enel stated that they promptly evacuated workers from the site and are collaborating closely with rescue teams dispatched by the fire department.
