Hurkacz beats Martínez to scoop his 8th ATP title

Hubert Hurkacz won his maiden title on clay courts on Sunday as he saw off Pedro Martínez from Spain 6:3, 6:4 in the ATP 250 tournament in Estoril, Portugal.

The Pole was the clear favorite of the match against his Spanish rival, ranked 77th. He won all three of their previous clashes, including one on a clay court, two years ago in Monte Carlo.

From the very beginning, Hurkacz was making the most of his trademark – serving. He managed to break his rival in the fourth game, which allowed him to control the rest of the set and take a 6:3 win.

Already in the first game of the second set, Hurkacz broke Martínez once again, never letting his opponent respond in kind. In the end, Hurkacz defeated Martínez 6:3, 6:4 and now may celebrate his first title since October 2023, when he lifted the trophy in Shanghai. The 27-year-old won his eighth ATP final, but for the first time, he did it on clay. The Wrocław-born player will move up to the eighth spot in the ATP ranking owing to his superb performance in Portugal.
