German official calls for thorough probe into WCK workers’ death in Gaza

The Federal Government Commissioner for Jewish Life in Germany and the Fight against Antisemitism, Felix Klein, has called on the Israeli government to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of World Central Kitchen (WCK) workers. At the same time, he warned against halting arms supplies to Israel.

Felix Klein admitted that he is shocked by what is happening in the Gaza Strip. “All this suffering - killing civilians, including international humanitarian workers - is difficult to bear,” he said in an interview with the Funke media group on Saturday.

However, it must be remembered that this military operation was initiated due to a terrorist attack by Hamas, he emphasized.

Israel “must do everything to avoid casualties among the civilian population,” Klein stressed. He added that it is not enough for the Israeli army to state that the attack in which seven WCK workers were killed was a “mistake,” but an investigation must be conducted into the matter.

“A democracy like Israel really needs to clarify this thoroughly. This cannot simply be dismissed by saying that such things happen in war,” Klein said.

The Commissioner stated in the same interview that an embargo on arms to Israel, demanded by various parties, “would be absolutely the wrong way to go.” He declared his support for continued arms supplies to Israel “regardless of the course of operations in the Gaza Strip.”

“We must support the victim who is fighting. And that victim is Israel,” Klein emphasized. “Therefore, we should provide military and other support, as we do in the case of Ukraine,” he added.
