Andriy Yermak, the head of the Ukrainian president’s office, stated in an interview for Politico that Russia is likely to launch a major offensive on Kharkiv in May or June. He also appealed to Donald Trump and the Republicans to emulate Ronald Reagan, who “fought the empire of evil.”
“I do not believe that anyone representing Ronald Reagan’s party will abandon Ukraine. Reagan understood the Soviet Union and Russia, and anyone who understands will continue to support our soldiers because they know that dictators never stop, and they must be stopped,” said Yermak.
He anticipates a final agreement on American aid for Ukraine. This concerns a USD 60 billion aid package blocked in the U.S. Congress by Republicans close to Trump, who will be running for the presidency in November.
The chief of Zelenskyy’s office emphasized that Republicans and their White House candidate must remember that they are Reagan’s party and continue to support Ukraine, especially when Russia is preparing for a major offensive.
Its target will likely be Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, located near the border with Russia in the northeast of the country. Recently, the Russian army has intensified attacks on the city, especially targeting civilian objects.
“We know that Putin is preparing a new wave of mobilization, and we estimate that new counteroffensive actions by the Russians may begin at the end of May or the beginning of June. We need to be prepared for this,” said Yermak, emphasizing that Ukraine critically needs additional air defense systems.
They are essential for defending both cities and the front lines, where Russian forces are causing huge losses using aerial precision-guided bombs. These are old Soviet bombs equipped with “wings” that allow them to be dropped from dozens of kilometers away from the front line.
“I repeat, time is a problem for us. I would like to emphasize that this is a critical moment, and it is very important for the aid package to be agreed upon this month,” said Yermak.
