Polish govt to allocate EUR 466,000 to purchase surplus grain

In a move to support its agricultural sector, the Polish government plans to allocate approximately PLN 2 billion zlotys (EUR 466,000) to purchase surplus grain from local farmers, Deputy Agriculture Minister Stefan Krajewski announced.

According to the minister, the initiative is currently in the final stages of planning in consultation with the Ministry of Finance.

Krajewski detailed that the drafts for this subsidy program are undergoing necessary procedural steps, with an ambition to launch the initiative swiftly. The goal is to distribute the funds to the farmers by the end of May, providing them with essential financial relief.

Farmers’ discontent

This decision comes against a backdrop of mounting tensions within the Polish agricultural community.

Farmers have actively expressed their discontent, arguing that the surge of agricultural imports from Ukraine compromises their competitiveness due to the lower pricing of these imports.

In response, farmers have taken to blocking motorways and border crossings with Ukraine, and have even resorted to actions such as dispersing imported Ukrainian grain across train tracks, highlighting their protests.

The situation was exacerbated by the waiver of customs duties on Ukrainian agricultural imports following Russia’s invasion in 2022, a measure intended to support Ukraine but which Polish farmers claim has flooded the European market with cheaper alternatives.

Adressing the issue

By purchasing the excess grain, the Polish government aims to mitigate the impact of these imports on local farmers, providing them with a fair chance to compete in the market.

This move is seen as an attempt to address the farmers' grievances and stabilize the agricultural sector amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
