Poland backs EUR 100 bn NATO military aid package for Ukraine: Polish FM

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said Poland backed a comprehensive aid package, proposed by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, outlining a EUR 100 billion, five-year plan dedicated to military assistance for Ukraine.

“Poland supports the NATO Secretary General’s efforts to aid Ukraine,” Sikorski stated, highlighting the dual focus on establishing a dedicated mission for utilizing the alliance’s resources and on providing substantial financial and military support.

The announcement came during a two-day meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels. The assembly was convened to deliberate on long-term military support for Ukraine, marking a critical moment for NATO’s involvement in the Ukraine crisis.

Stoltenberg’s proposal represents a strategic shift towards a direct involvement of NATO in the Ukraine conflict, aiming to streamline the alliance’s support mechanisms. This involves leveraging NATO's staff and training capabilities, alongside financial and military assistance, to bolster Ukraine’s defenses.

This stance by Poland underscores the country's commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and security. It also reflects the broader sentiment within NATO concerning the need for a more structured and unified approach to the crisis.

This ambitious initiative aims not only to supply arms, ammunition, and equipment but also to establish a more coordinated approach within the Western alliance towards aiding Ukraine.

Polish-Ukraine relations seeing improvement

At the foreign ministers meeting in Brussels, Sikorski discussed Warsaw’s ties with Kyiv with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba, who was also present in the Belgian capital. Other matters touched upon by the two politicians were the situation at the front and further military support for Ukraine.

“During our meeting, Radosław Sikorski and I discussed ways how Poland can contribute to defending Ukrainian airspace from Russian missiles and how to protect Polish airspace from their incursions,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dymitro Kuleba stated on X. “Ukraine is currently the only country in the world that defends itself against ballistic missile attacks almost every day,” he added.
