Polish prosecutors have initiated an investigation into the demise of Damian Soból, a Polish aid worker who was killed in the Gaza Strip, a deputy district prosecutor has announced.
“We have started an investigation into the killing of Polish citizen Damian Sobol on April 1-2 in the Gaza Strip as a result of an attack by the Israeli armed forces using explosives,” Beata Starzecka, from the District Prosecutor’s Office in the south-eastern Polish city of Przemyśl, the home city of the aid worker, told Polish Press Agency (PAP) on Wednesday.
She added that she could not provide any further details at this time.
Soból was among seven humanitarian workers from the World Central Kitchen food charity who died in the attack by Israeli forces on Monday.
Apart from the Pole, the attack also killed Australian and British citizens, a person with U.S.-Canadian citizenship as well as a Palestinian driver.
‘A real tragedy’ says Israeli envoy to Poland
Israeli ambassador to Poland, Yacov Livne, was invited as TVP World’s guest this afternoon. Livne said that the State of Israel expresses deep regret over what has happened in Gaza and that it will investigate the incident in order to understand what exactly took place. He also said Israel will take all possible measures to ensure that such a tragic event won’t occur again.
“...We hope that the results of the investigation will be clear in the matter of days and we will be able to share this information with our friends in Poland,” he said.
Livne gave no specific answer when asked about the possibility of working in parallel with the prosecutor’s office in Przemyśl. He stressed that Israel will conduct their own investigation, but the proceedings, given the ongoing war, could take some time.
Nevertheless, he articulated the incident as“a real tragedy which happens during times of war.”
