Poland’s Supreme Audit Office (NIK) has decided to notify the prosecutor’s office of a suspected criminal offense by leading members of the former Law and Justice (PiS) government, including the former prime minister, NIK has reported.
According to NIK, a top independent state audit body charged with safeguarding public spending, the suspects acted to the detriment of the public interest, namely local government, in connection with state support.
NIK said in a statement on Tuesday that, after analyzing the evidence collected during audits on the financing of local government offices and the support they received from the state during the period in which tax reforms had been introduced and during which the economy had been rebuilt after the COVID-19 pandemic, it decided “to notify the prosecutor’s office of a suspected criminal offense… by the former prime minister [Mateusz Morawiecki].”
It added that the former Finance Minister Magdalena Rzeczkowska, a former deputy finance minister, and other state officials had also been reported to the prosecutor’s office.
NIK explained that its notification concerns offenses related to exceeding powers and neglect of duty, which were to the detriment of the public interest.
According to NIK, the offenses led to losses for local governments of at least PLN 4 billion (EUR 931.85 million).
