Poland’s allies were notified beforehand of Eurocorps commander’s dismissal: def min

Wladysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, the Polish defense minister, has said that Poland’s allies were told beforehand about the dismissal of Lieutenant-General Jarosław Gromadziński from his post as commander of Eurocorps owing to a counter-intelligence probe.

He added that the dismissal “is not a matter of concern between us and the allies.”

The Defense Ministry announced in a statement on Wednesday that it had taken the decision to recall the Polish general from the post of Eurocorps commander after the Military Counter-intelligence Service (SKW) had initiated an investigation into the general’s security clearance and “acquired new information” about the officer.

His replacement was Lieutenant-General Piotr Bazeusz, a former deputy chief of the general staff and one of the most experienced Polish military commanders in NATO structures.

“Just because such a procedure is being implemented does not mean that someone is being accused,” Kosiniak-Kamysz told the private news channel TVN24, adding that a process had been started “to clarify the situation” and that decisions would be made after its conclusion.

“I value the achievements of the general... Everything needs to be checked and clarified,” said the defense minister.

On June 29, 2023, Gromadziński assumed command of the multinational force, which included troops from Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Poland.

The European Corps is a multinational rapid reaction force formed in order to take part in crisis, humanitarian, rescue, and peace operations in cooperation with the European Union and NATO. Its command, together with a support unit, has been stationed in Strasbourg, France, and it is able to deploy a combat force of up to 60,000 troops.
